Morocco's four Imperial Cities
Rabat:
Rabat, known as “the City of Gardens”, is the capital of Morocco. This is where all the institutional and political life of the country takes place. This imperial city is located on the Atlantic coast, very close to Casablanca. One of the most cinematographic and romantic places in the world. The truth is that it is worth spending at least one day discovering the streets of the Medina, as well as its most important monuments. As, for example, the Hassan Tower, the Fortress or the Kasbah, the Necropolis of Chellah or the Mausoleum of Mohamed V.
Rabat has a curious mix of past and modernity. This has made it one of the most dynamic and mercantile cities in the country. You can start your tour at the Kasbah of the Oudayas. A citadel that houses one of the most beautiful and striking areas of the capital. Along your walk, you will see how narrow alleys open up before you to give way to beautiful white and blue klein facades, as well as gardens of French and Andalusian heritage. Just 10 minutes away is the Medina of Rabat. A perfect place to do all your shopping, of course, after the traditional haggling with the merchants.
Marrakech:
This is the most popular and touristic city in Morocco. Its location is in the Atlas Mountains, much further south than the rest of the Imperial Cities of the country. You can start your visit by taking the Medina as a starting point. This is the place where you will find the riads or traditional Moroccan palaces where you can stay. Once here, the very inertia of the streets of Marrakech will allow you to discover the beauty of unique buildings such as the Medersa Ben Youssef, the largest in the country, the Jemma el Fna Square, one of the most lively places in Marrakech or the Koutoubia Mosque of Hispano-Muslim style.
Fes:
Fez is an imperial, medieval and religious city. The cultural value of its Medina Fez-el-Bali is such that it was also recognized by Unesco as a World Heritage Site. If you want to soak up all the beauty of Fez, we recommend that you extend your visit for more than one day in the city.
Start by passing the imposing Blue Gate or Bab Boujeloud that leads to the Medina. From there, you can walk, while enjoying your shopping in the souks. In your tour you will also find symbolic buildings such as the Madrasas or Koranic schools, the Nejjarine Museum of Art and Crafts or the Mausoleum of Mulay Idris II.
Meknès:
Visiting Meknès means breathing tranquility and authenticity. This is the last of the four Imperial Cities of Morocco, but not the least important. In fact, this is undoubtedly the city with the most Moroccan essence in all its corners. In Meknes prices are lower. So you can do all your shopping without haggling as much as in other cities. Meknès invites you to stroll through its quiet streets, which will take you to the El-Hedim Square to contemplate the wonderful Bab-El-Mansour gate, the Medersa Bou Inania and the Mausoleum Muley Ismail. There is no doubt that this is the perfect end to your Imperial route through Morocco.
